Installing FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) grating is a straightforward process, but proper preparation and installation are key to ensuring safety and long-term performance. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Tools & Materials Needed
Measuring tape
Circular saw or reciprocating saw with carbide-tipped blade
Grinder or deburring tool
Clamps
Fasteners (M-clips, C-clips, or L-clips depending on support type)
Drill with stainless steel bits
Safety gear (gloves, safety glasses, dust mask)
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Plan Layout
Measure the area and design the layout for optimal panel placement with minimal cutting.
Ensure the support structure (steel, concrete, or fiberglass) is level and capable of bearing the grating load.
2. Cut Grating (if needed)
Use a circular saw or reciprocating saw with a carbide-tipped blade.
Cut from the underside to reduce chipping.
After cutting, use a grinder or deburring tool to smooth all cut edges.
Seal all cut edges with a resin sealer (manufacturer-recommended) to prevent corrosion and fraying.
3. Position Grating Panels
Lay the panels onto the support structure.
Leave a small gap (typically 1/4" or 6 mm) between adjacent panels to allow for thermal expansion and drainage.
Align bearing bars in the direction of the support spans.
4. Secure Grating
Use appropriate fasteners based on your support:
M-Clips: Secure grating to the support frame through the grating opening; good for heavy loads.
C-Clips: Connect adjacent panels together to prevent movement.
L-Clips: Anchor grating directly to support structure at the edges.
Ensure fasteners are:
Corrosion-resistant (usually stainless steel)
Tightened enough to hold panels firmly, but not over-torqued
5. Final Inspection
Ensure all clips are secure.
Walk the surface to check for movement or uneven areas.
Double-check that all edges are sealed and fasteners are flush or recessed to avoid tripping.
Tips
Always follow the grating manufacturer's specifications.
Consider anti-slip surfaces if in wet or oily environments.
Use lifting tools or teams for heavy panels to avoid injury.
